The Phatic Function refers to a part of communication used to keep the line of communication open. It is the means whereby two or more speakers believe that other that being listened to, they are also being understood. Despite it appearing that content is minimal. It is a function "primarily serving to establish, to prolong, or to discontinue communication". It is a kind of sociological function as well as a linguistic one. In speech communication the term means "small talk" and has also been called "grooming talking." For example, greetings such as "hello", "how are you?" (in many contexts), and "good afternoon" are all examples of phatic expressions.
