The top 10 most challenged books of 2019 feature prevalent themes. The dominant regularly cited theme among the books is LGBTQIA+ content. Other reasons for book challenges include: extreme sexual overtones, extremism in political agendas, magic, witchcraft, profane language and conflicting with either religious viewpoint or the traditional family structure. Majority of the books are written for children and teenagers. They’re challenged, banned or censored because they address sensitive or controversial issues which may instigate a discussion with children. Challenged books are censored or banned mainly in schools and libraries. The American Library Association (ALA) targeted 566 books thus indicating there is a long list of challenges to books in learning institutions. The ALA condemns book censorship as it limits exploration and free access of information. It holds campaigns against banned books to uphold the freedom of reading. Some of the book challenges go unreported and ALA calls on students to report any book challenges in their places of learning.
