The chlorine is a typical representative of halogens. It is a strong oxidizer and can react with a variety of reductants: 2Na + Cl2 = 2NaCl 2P + 3Cl2 = PCl3 Also it can be oxidized using extremely active oxidizers: Cl2 + 3F2 = 2ClF3 In aqueous alkali it disproportionates, yielding chlorides and hypochlorites or chlorates depending on reaction conditions.
