The IUPAC defined that the valency is the maximum number of univalent atoms (originally hydrogen or chlorine atoms) that may combine with an atom of the element under consideration, or with a fragment, or for which an atom of this element can be substituted. Basically, each atom has the amount of electrons that defines the property of an atom and that are responsible not only for the possible bonding, but also for the force of the bonding that depends on many factors. The attractive force which holds together the constituent particles(mainly atoms or ions). The concept of valence was developed in the second half of the 19th century and helped successfully explain the molecular structure of most of the chemical compounds.
