1. Distinguish between the following:
a. Compatible and incompatible elements
b. Extensive and intensive variables
c. Major and trace elements
d. Covalent and metallic bonds
e. Isomorphism and Polymorphism
a) The compatibility of an element in a rock is a weighted average of its compatibility in each of the minerals present while incompatible element is one that is least stable within its crystal structure.
b) An extensive variable is one which depends on system size (like mass or volume). An intensive variable is one which does not depend on system size (like temperature, pressure, or density).
c)Major elements are defined as those elements that compose 95% of the earth's crust. They are Si, Al, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Ti, Fe, Mn and P.Trace elements include iron, copper, cobalt, zinc, selenium, chromium, iodine, and molybdenum.
d) A covalent bond is formed when both the atoms share pairs of valence electrons. A metallic bond is formed between a cloud of free electrons and the positively charges ions in a metal.
e) Isomorphism refers to the presence of two or more compounds with identical morphologies. Polymorphism refers to the presence of different morphologies of the same substance.
