A specimen collection is a process of collection of body fluids for laboratory analysis and must:
- minimize the risk of errors comprising false-positive and false-negative results;
- protect the health and safety of both the patient and the staff;
- be collected using the correct technique and equipment;
- be collected at the appropriate time;
- follow all control precautions;
- samples must be labelled correctly;
During transportation, specimens must:
- be transported in containers must be transported in a self-sealing polythene bag
- be sent to the laboratory as soon as possible
For utilization of the specimen:
- specimen containers must be discarded into boxes or bags with disinfectant;
- reusable materials must be kept separate from disposables for disinfection before further reuse.
