A specimen collection involves the collection of tissue or fluids for laboratory analysis. The procedure must minimize the risk of introducing error and protect the health and safety of both the patient and the staff. Specimens must be collected using the correct technique and equipment and at the right time. All standard infection prevention and control precautions should be followed. All the samples must be labeled with name, code, identifier, type the specimen, etc. All specimen containers must be transported in a self-sealing polythene bag with the laboratory request form compartment and the specimen compartment. Specimens must be sent to the laboratory as soon as possible. Finally, specimen containers should be discarded into containers filled with disinfectant or hazardous waste bags. Reusable plastics, glass, and other materials should be kept separate from disposables for disinfection and decontamination before later reuse.
