Define the sociological term " stigma" .
Briefly discuss how it has affects people experiencing an illness
Stigma is a socially discrediting characteristic, behavior, or reputation that causes others to mentally classify an individual into an undesirable, rejected stereotype rather than an accepted, normal one.
Stigma can exacerbate symptoms and lower the likelihood of receiving treatment. According to a recent assessment of literature, self-stigma has a negative impact on rehabilitation among those who have been diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. Mental illness is linked to social isolation, bad housing, unemployment, and poverty. As a result, stigma can keep people stuck in a cycle of illness.
