Traditional societies have a predominant role in habit and custom. Their orientation is not to the future but the past. In these societies, kin relationships are enhanced in various ways like succession, residence, and inheritance. Inheritance in traditional societies is mainly along the family line. If a family member dies in a traditional society, the heir of the assets such as land is usually one of the family members. Through this, there is the fostering of kinship. It is the same on matters of succession since the property or title interchanges within the family. In traditional societies, it is a common practice for family members to reside in the same homestead. It fosters kin relationships as they are always together. From the above analysis, it is evident that succession, residence, and inheritance foster kin relationships in traditional societies.
