Explain how social justice could play a role in mitigating the environmental effects (exacerbating) of the pandemic on poverty (as a social problem).
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has severe health effects and serious implications for economic growth and social development. These effects have led to increased levels of poverty in the affected areas. However, social justice can play a great role in mitigating these environmental challenges that have come as a result of the pandemic.
For example, the pandemic has made it more difficult for people especially the poorest and most vulnerable to meet their basic needs. Due to this, it is the role of social justice to guarantee income, food security and basic services for a large group of people who have been rendered extremely vulnerable and who were not necessarily included in existing social programs before the pandemic.
In the case of the people who become homeless in the fear of contracting COVID-19 social justice can play a role of proving housing, food and access to health to them so that they can be equal to the other people and also to lower poverty levels.
Social justice can also play a role in ensuring that there is equality in provision of job opportunities for both genders and this will help reduce the level of poverty worldwide during the pandemic.
