1. Reflect on how vulnerable groups may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Migrants, poorer populations, and disabled individuals, who were already marginalized before the coronavirus have emerged, and are disproportionately affected by the lockdowns and other responses used to address the health crisis. The general view is that during the pandemic, society's fault lines become more visible and, in many cases, worsen. People who are already poor have been disproportionately affected by the resulting economic catastrophe.
When schools were closed during the lockdowns in several countries, those from poorer neighborhoods with children were particularly hard struck. Many families rely on school meals to help feed their children adequate, nutritional food. Those who cannot afford laptops are also unable to participate in online lessons, which have replaced many traditional classes.
Language challenges are not the only issue that some immigrant populations encounter. Because of their legal status in the country where they live, undocumented migrants and refugees, for example, are deemed vulnerable. It can be difficult to obtain crucial services and medical care without proper documents or health service numbers.
