Question #205534

Discuss what is meant by democracy in ancient (Greek) times.

Expert's answer

Some municipalities in Ancient Greece were democracies, while others were oligarchies. Democracy referred to rule by the people, whereas oligarchy referred to rule by the selected few representatives. In Ancient Greece, democracy was relatively direct, with all laws being decided on by all citizens. Instead of voting for lawmakers, as is done now, each person was required to vote on each law.
