What is meant by access to schools? Provide an example of why access to South
African schools is not always equal. (4)
Access to schools is how educational institutions ensure that all students get equal opportunities in learning. It can also mean the ability to reach the educational institutions and the services offered by the institution.
Unequal access to schools in South Africa
1. Poor infrastructure in public schools. For example, there are poor structures of sanitation like latrines. This is very evident mostly in public schools in rural areas. The poor conditions of the latrines have led to the tragic death of children in schools.
2. Inadequate teaching-learning materials. Materials like books are overcrowded by the learnings hence many do not get access of the books. For example, when assignments are given many learners fail to do because of the inability to access the books.
3. Inadequate teachers. Many public schools have few teachers as compared to the number of learners therefore parents are compelled to hire teachers at their expense.
4. Poor roads that lead to the schools. Many public schools in rural areas are connected to poor roads. Many of the roads when it rains get damaged by water and prevent many learners and teachers from accessing the institutions hence delay the learning process.
