All of our actual qualities are influenced by our ability to take advantage of opportunities. Opportunities come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are extremely revolutionary, challenging authority to the point of causing conflict. There must be limitations on one person's opportunity if it would intrude on another's, but that encroachment would not be genuine opportunity, but rather control. One side in the American Civil War believed they were fighting for the right to own a slave. So, why are we thinking about it? For what reason do we weigh how far we can push liberties, and how much we risk jeopardizing society's integrity if we don't enact regulations to protect ourselves? The historical context of laws is replete of strange sensations of apprehension about what would happen if certain opportunities were granted. Where do those apprehensions come from? That is something we should think about.
