Answer:

Urie Bronfenbrenner presented with the theory of ecological system, where he tried to explain the process of a child’s development concerning his interaction with his surroundings.

He came up with 5 interrelated systems and the influence of this system in child development is based on the relationships within these systems. So the systems are:

  • Microsystem: This is the first level of the theory, they are the relationships that fall under the direct contact of a child, like parents, siblings, and peers. These interactions are very crucial for a child’s development.
  • Mesosystem: This system moves ahead of close relationships and enters a child’s school and friends. So this system encompasses the interaction of microsystems like the child’s parents interacting with the child’s teacher.
  • Exosystem: This talks about the other formal and informal agencies in the society, which do not directly have an effect on children but influence them or any component from their microsystem indirectly. For example, parent’s work time policy, mass media, and it's content.
  • Macrosystem: It talks about how culture affects a child’s development like the beliefs of parents, socio-economic status, conditions of her home.
  • Chronosystem: This includes any traumatic, historical, or happy event that occurs over a lifetime and impacts one’s development. Like divorce of parents, physical abuse.

His theory is of great importance to educators and teachers across the world because it allows the teachers to build fundamental relationships with their students and create a communication-rich classroom that involves their guardians. Researches said that interaction between the students and children is very important so the teachers should come up with activities that facilitate this interaction. But how this interaction unfolds is also dependent on the personal characteristics of the individual like socio-economic status, home background, context, and the classroom setup. So helping the child to learn is facilitated when the teacher is mindful of the interplay between these factors. Therefore, a child’s characteristics are as important as their home or social characteristics for development and learning.
