Discuss the following physical media characteristics:
1. Throughput (6 Marks)
2. Cost (6 Marks)
3. Noise immunity (6 Marks)
4. Size and scalability (6 Marks)
5. Connectors and media converters (6 Marks)
1.Throughput is the rate of successful message delivery over a communication channel. The data these messages belong to may be delivered over a physical or logical link, or it can pass through a certain network node. Throughput is usually measured in bits per second (bit/s or bps), and sometimes in data packets per second (p/s or pps) or data packets per time slot.
2. costs means the costs incurred by the Host Council in hosting the Network, including but not limited to, hardware, software licences, lease payments, interest and fees incurred on leases, communication costs, stationery, courier charges and any other resources associated with operating the network.
3. Noise immunity – digital data can be recovered without any error as long as the distortion and noise are within limits. On the other hand, for an analog message, even a slight distortion or interference in the waveform will cause an error in the received signal.
4.Size and scalability is the capability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work, or its potential to be enlarged in order to accommodate that growth
5.Connectors and media converters
media converter is a networking device that transparently converts Ethernet or other communication protocols from one cable type to another type. A connector is a device that terminates a segment of cabling or provides a point of entry for networking devices such as computers, hubs, and routers.
