A variable is a placeholder that can take any allowed value. For example, we design a heat sensor that measures the temperature in the bathroom and turns on alarm when the temperature is below a certain limit. The temperature here is an independent variable, a quantity that may change and defines what signal the sensor will output. The magnitude of the signal here is a dependent variable.
