E2—Spring Catapult launches Angry bird
An angry bird, with a mass of 5.00 kg, is launching itself using a catapult, for unknown reasons. Presumably it is angry because it cannot fly, and in fact air resistance is zero (which makes flying impossible, for complicated reasons). Treat the catapult as a spring with force constant k= 500 N/m. The initial time is when the catapult is at maximum stretch with the bird at rest. The final time has the bird at maximum height, moving horizontally.
a) Draw the energy bar chart for the system. Be sure to describe what objects are included in the system. [4 marks]
b) The catapult is drawn back 2.00 m. Find the spring energy stored in the catapult. [2 marks]
c) Find the launch velocity of the angry bird (assume ∆h=0 during the launch). [2 marks]
d) The bird rises to a maximum height of 10 m. Find the final velocity of the bird. [4 marks]
e) Use your answers to parts c) and d) to determine the launch angle. [3 marks]
