The fragment "[...] as in the case of light passing through darkness" refers to the propagation of light rays. Suppose a beam of monochromatic light strikes a cylindrical container of height H = 16 centimeters and radius R = 10 centimeters. With the container empty, the beam passes close to the upper edge and strikes the lower edge at a diametrically opposite point (figure below). The container is then filled completely with liquid glycerin, and the beam is deflected and strikes the center, at the bottom of the container.
