when we place slab of any material in presence of electric field E then by this external electric field the inner charges are start to rearrange in the direction of field or polarization P is produced.in this can case the Displacement vector D can be represented as below

D=ϵ0E+PD=\epsilon_0E+P

where ϵ0\epsilon_0 is a constant which is called permittivity of vacuum.
