Question #93871

Details on Working principles of generator and electric motor

Expert's answer

The principle of operation of the generator is based on the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction, when an EMF appears in a conductor moving in a magnetic field and crossing the lines of the magnetic induction vector, therefore, such a conductor can be considered as a source of electrical energy.

The moving electric charges that create an electric current in a magnetic field are affected by the Lorentz force, which tends to shift the charges in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the current and the lines of magnetic induction. When an electric current passes through a metal conductor or a coil made of it, this force tends to move / rotate each turn with current and the entire coil as a whole. Thus, the energy of the current is converted into the energy of mechanical motion.
