The distance should be selected according to the manual because each electromagnet has its own magnetic field (its own shape and magnitude) and sensors are made to work appropriately with given electromagnets. However, if the sensor measures the magnitude of the field, larger distances result in smaller field magnitudes. Vice versa, the closer the magnet is to the sensor, the higher are the readings.
