1) Rastering is the rendering of images using raster. Raster is a dot matrix structure with each dot (pixel) containing info about its color in one of RGB representations. Raster images are commonly stored as image files. Rastering is neither a technique nor program nor circuit for converting serial signal to parallel.
2) Before 2000 all printers used either serial or parallel interface, and the type of the interface determined what cable one needs to use for connecting this printer to PC. Printers with serial interface were slow and cheap and parallel printers
were fast and expensive. If someone wanted to connect a device with serial output to a device with parallel input, he needed using the serial-to-parallel converter (connector).
