While you are chatting with your friend at an expensive restaurant, she suddenly stops in mid-
swallow and looks panicked. When you ask what is wrong, she indicates that she can’t speak
and runs toward the restroom. What should you do? Assume that your first aid does not
work—what procedure might emergency medical personnel use to help your friend?
This is choking, which occurs when an object is lodged in the upper respiratory tract of a person. If the person is choking, I should perform an abdominal thrust. I can achieve this by standing behind the choking person and form a fist with one hand and cover the fist with another hand while holding the upper abdomen of the person in my arms. I will then place the fist in between the ribs and start pushing it inwards and in an upward direction. This will help in eradicating the food particles from the windpipe of the affected individual. If this technique does not work, emergency medical personnel should perform a bronchoscopy which will help to visualize the foreign object lodged in the respiratory tract and eliminate it with the help of tools that attaches to the bronchoscope.
