Imagine that you are tasked with creating blueprints for the role of technology in some
new society. Using Rawls’ Original Position thought experiment, provide an argument justifying
the appropriate role (or, lack thereof) in this new society for one of the following technologies:
a) self-checkout machines
b) lab-grown meat
c) drones
Your answer should be between 3-4 pages, and include engagement with lectures and at least one
course reading. Your essay will be assessed based on your demonstrated understanding of the
materials, critical thinking skills, and quality of writing/ adherence to style guidelines (whether
MLA, APA, or Chicago)
Customers who do not want to wait in line or engage face-to-face with a cashier have more alternatives to self-checkout. Cultured beef takes up a lot less space, consumes a lot less water, and emits fewer pollutants (Leng, 2017). In addition, traditional beef farming produces many greenhouse gases, including methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide, all of which contribute to global warming. Lab-grown beef has the potential to cut these emissions dramatically. Drones can assist law enforcement. Searching for lost children, providing tactical surveillance and suspect tracking, assisting in accident investigations, and monitoring huge crowds are possible uses for UAS.
