1. Clarify or briefly state your thesis or main claim. How are you going tp convince your reader to believe or disbelieve in your contention?
2. What are arguing for or against? Present your supporting evidences against each for or against minor claims.
3. Offer a counter-argument. Anticipate objections to yout contention.
A thesis is the culmination of a lengthy process of thought. The first thing you do after reading an essay assignment is not to create a thesis. Before you can create an argument on any issue, you must first gather and arrange data, search for plausible linkages between known facts, and consider the relevance of these relationships.
The concrete facts used to support a claim are referred to as evidence. Ideally, evidence is something on which everyone agrees, or something that anyone with proper training and equipment could independently verify.
