What is the role of Reason in Plato’s ethics? Discuss this in the light of the Charioteer Analogy.
The main role of Reason is to evaluate the most valuable goals to pursue. He does this job with the help of thumos. Reason represents the soul that guides a person to truth. Additionally, to achieve the goals, Reason trains his horses so as to work in unity. He should have determination and vision so as to achieve the aims. Moreover, being a charioteer, he understands the passion of his horses; hence, harnessing their muscularity. The masterful also gives Reason the opportunity to rule and keep stock he desires. Therefore, Reason also trains his two horses to work towards the roles. Despite the weaknesses of the horses, the charioteer always strive to direct the chariot to perform duties in oneness.
