discuss the history and development of Languishing and Flourishing and what they encompass?
Flourishing and languishing were developed by sociologists Barbra Fredrickson and Corey Keyes. They reasoned and presented a condition they termed a mental state; according to them, mental health does not mean a lack of mental disorder or general mental well-being (Wang, 2017). They introduced the two concepts arguing that people with complete mental health are flourishing while those without such mental state are languishing. Flourishing, therefore, refers to a state where a person has positive emotions, psychological functioning, social function, and lives a quality life. On the other hand, languishing encompasses symptoms such as burnout, inability to focus, and lack of motivation.
