As James Gaston argues, New Public Management (NPM) reforms increase efficiency, resulting in less democracy in government; numerous studies offer reasons that clarify the rationale that underpin his thesis. As can be observed, some of the initial positions are rooted in the administrative philosophy of the NPM. Furthermore, NPM proponents stress how competitive mechanisms may reduce corruption situations caused by public workers. However, there is rising disquiet among the public and certain public administration academics in Western democracies. Furthermore, it appears that the premise is that ethical behaviour would automatically follow the implementation of NPM changes. As a result, the NPM reforms increase efficiency while decreasing democracy.
