Organizational subsystems are all parts of an organization working together for a common purpose: to ensure that the operation runs smoothly. Structure, vision, strategy, and culture are examples of organizational subsystems. These subsystems have their own set of formal and informal norms, as well as their own flow of communication and organization. The efficiency of the firm as a whole reflects the efficiency of its subsystems. A system may readily separate itself from others and lead in performance with the correct flow of communication, workplace organization, and office culture.

Because it does not exist in a vacuum, an organization is an open system. The world has an impact on the organization, and the organization has an impact on the globe.

The lens of organizational culture is one way to look at this. When it is studied in research or discussed in change initiatives, it is frequently assumed that all members of an organization partake in one, and only on a culture. However, because a company does not exist in a vacuum, each employee is a part of multiple cultures, or subcultures (consider the differences between going into the finance, marketing, or HR departments), as well as multiple cultures outside the organization. National, communal, religious, and other forms of culture exist.
