Health and safety practices ensure that an organizations’ work environment is free of harmful hazards which can be injurious to staff if not properly contained. Using this statement, explain the health and safety practices that a human resource manager should implement in the workplace.
To ensure that an organization is free from harmful hazards that can harm workers, the Human resource manager can implement health and safety practices based on recommendations by the International Labour Organization (ILO) on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). Hazards and risks to employees need to be identified and assessed gradually (International Labour Organization, 2021). These protective and preventive measures should be implemented as follows. Firstly, the HR manager should eliminate the hazard. Secondly, HR should implement engineering controls or company related measures to control the hazard at its source. Thirdly, he can design safe work systems to minimize the risk or hazard. Finally, HR should provide appropriate personal protective equipment to workers, including free clothing where hazards cannot be controlled, and measures that ensure the use and maintaining of this equipment (International Labour Organization, 2021). Hazard control procedures and arrangements need to be adapted to hazards faced by the organization. They should be modified and reviewed regularly and should comply with regulations and laws and reflect good practice. They should consider up-to-date knowledge encompassing information from occupational safety and health services and reports from institutions.
