The Supreme Court has jurisdiction over the authority to hear a wide range of cases. Its jurisdiction is generally classified into original, appellate and advisory. Under its original jurisdiction, the Court enforces fundamental rights, hears federal disputes and can transfer cases. The District Magistrate's Court exercise jurisdiction and powers in proceedings of a civil nature where either; the proceedings concern a claim under customary law or the value of the subject matter in dispute does not exceed one thousand shillings. The Regional Trial Courts shall exercise appellate jurisdiction over all cases decided by Metropolitan Trial Courts, Municipal Trial Courts, and Municipal Circuit Trial Courts in their respective territorial jurisdictions.
