  1. It arose from of the French and Algerians' opposing political ideals and movements, which were mostly founded on economic and social inequities. Nationalism, and the revolutionary fight it waged against France to obtain independence as a separate country, free of French influence.
  2. Algerians had the right to select their own future, according to Charles de Gaulle, who stated it in 1959. Despite terrorist attacks by anti-independence French Algerians and a failed coup attempt in France by members of the French army, Algeria gained independence in 1962.
  3. A peace deal was reached on March 16, 1962, in Evian-les-Bains, France, granting Algerian independence awaiting a nationwide referendum on the topic. Algerians overwhelmingly supported the deal on July 1, 1962, and the majority of Algeria's one million Europeans fled the nation.
