Explain THREE reasons why the British Government introduced Amelioration measures in the British colonies.
The introduction of Amelioration measures in 1823 was mainly to:
a) Improve the living conditions of the slaves in the British Caribbean colonies. They would have rest days on Saturday to go to the market and mass on Sunday.
b) Delay and sabotage emancipation by making abolitionists discontinue their struggle.
c) They also wanted to pacify the do-gooder. The British Government was trying to quell the anger of the planters.
