After being accused of spearheading the Philistine revolt, Dr. Jose, a reformist leader in Spain, was caught and prosecuted in a Spanish court-martial. However, there are revolutionist tales claiming this doctor repudiated his Masonic principles as well as his writings the night before his death, then reconverted to Catholicism following hours of persuasion by Jesuit priests. Until years later, in the mid-1930s, when the retraction letter with Dr. Rizal's signature was found, his friends and family had serious reservations. There are numerous points of view about this retraction. Some claim the paper is fabricated, while others claim it is genuine because Rizal's signature was discovered.
