The fight of Cuito Cuanavale, and Cuba's intervention in Angola, is seen as a watershed moment in Southern African history. It resulted in the movement of a large Cuban armed force towards the Namibian border in the west. The combat in Angola's south western region resulted in the evacuation of South African, ANC, and Cuban forces, and Namibia's independence. The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale was crucial in laying groundwork for talks. It would be pointless to make Cubans look silly.
