1. Building literacy and language skills help children be kindergarten-ready, so they enter school with a love of books and ready to learn. This is important for school success because eventually they move from learning to read, to reading to learn. At that point, if children struggle with reading, they’ll struggle with learning.
2. Six such strategies are: making connections, visualizing, inferring, questioning, determining importance, and synthesizing.
3. poor socio-economic backgrounds, transport, parental illiteracy, reading problems, differentiated teaching, resources, the language of teaching and learning, and writing support.
4. HoDs co-ordinate all educational activities between the top management of the school and the educators. HoDs have a teaching role in their specialist subjects and also a supervisory function which requires administration of their departments and rendering professional assistance to teachers. They act as liason between the principal and the staff, provides instructional guidance to teachers, plan, organize, command, coordinate, control, and carry out delegated tasks.
5. It provides teachers time to give direct instruction in small groups as needed, conference individually with readers, and conduct ongoing assessments to help inform their instruction. Readers' Workshop enables teachers to know their students, and to let them drive instruction in the classroom.
