Discuss three criticisms of functionalism theory
The functionalism theory argues that society is a stable and orderly system despite being complex. It has functions and structures that are interconnected or social patterns with the goal of ensuring that individual needs in society are met. Some critics of functionalism theory are: since it intently focuses on equilibrium and social order it does not offer a whole explanation on social change. Also, in the theory, the role of action played by an individual is downplayed as the theory views the institutions and society as the primary analysis units. The significance of individuals is based only on their social system positions such as social relations and status. Moreover, since it downplays the individual roles, functionalism fails to recognize how social institutions may be altered by individual actions.
