The notion of state capture has been given a strange perception especially in the last few years in South Africa. State capture describes when private interests significantly influence the state's decision-making processes to their own advantage. South Africa has had massive corruption hobbling its economy, leading to a judicial commission investigating allegations of state capture under former President Jacob Zuma. The state capture commission, known as the Zondo Commission, published the first part of the report in January 2022, and the second part in February 2022. The report confirms perceptions of state capture in SA, ranging from corruption deals, state appointments and awarding of tenders without background checks and personal interests among government officials. Thus, state capture has manifested as a deep governance problem in South Africa as exhibited by the Zondo Commission.
