The novel Noughts and Crosses is about love and hate. Noughts despise Crosses, while Crosses despise Noughts. Noughts are regarded to be unintelligent, therefore they employ violence to advance their cause. Crosses have a lot of power, and they don't give Noughts a chance in life. Because Noughts are white and Crosses are black, this is the case. This is the first in a four-part series that is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Each character has their own distinct personality, which you will learn more about as you progress through the series. I enjoyed the book and thought the author did an excellent job of conveying her arguments regarding prejudice and racism.
As people fight for their rights, the novel is both sorrowful and violent. This novel has clung to my head and I can't seem to get enough of it. Because of the context, it is not always simple to read, yet it grabs you so tightly that you feel compelled to continue reading. I would strongly recommend this book because, instead of reading a dull nonfiction book about human rights, you can read it and learn a lot more about these topics. This is not a book for the faint of heart!
