The subject of the poem is farming. The poem describes a passionate farmer who sows seeds in rainy loam soil with anticipation that he/she will have a promising harvest.

The simile in the poem is present in the lines, “I will ride upon this heaving surface As a boat rides upon the water.”

The win is has been personified when the persona says that “The wind sings upon my lips.” Again, the boat is personified when the person hints that the black earth can embrace, “The black earth embraces my ankles And clings to my bent knees.” Embracing and singings are traits that are attributed to human beings.

Farming is exaggerated when the farmer uses a metaphor of boat cleaving the water to compare with is ploughing of loam soil.

Boat cleaving the water to compare with is ploughing of loam soil. The movement of the boat in water is compared with a plough in land.

The poet presents a happy mood with the use of figurative language as he is singing hopefully for a good harvest. . The tone of the poem is assertive and resolute. The poet's upbeat and joyful demeanor suggests that he is confident in the outcome of his efforts.
