Maureen Isaacson
In the story, ‘I could have loved gold’ by Maureen Isaacson, the narrator recalls a childhood where her parents were very absent from her life. Though very wealthy, the narrator’s parents seem unhappy and do not have close and nurturing relationships with each other or their children. Therefore, while the narrator’s parents are there, they are in many ways not very involved in her life. The character Aunt Sal, however, is different. She seems both vibrant and close to her family. This story makes a statement about socio-economic issues, since it comments on the immense privilege enjoyed by the family at the expense of others.
