Scaffolding is the technique of splitting the learning into chunks and providing a tool, or structure, with each chunk. Therefore, the case of the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky and Bruner will aid me when scaffolding reading; for instance, I might preview the text and discuss key vocabulary, or chunk the text and then read and discuss as you go. The reason is that the theories emphasize a child's environment, especially the social environment, more than Piaget did. Both agree that adults should play an active role in assisting the child's learning. Bruner, like Vygotsky, emphasized the social nature of knowledge, citing that other people should help a child advance skills through the process of scaffolding.
