Can a just-in-time purchase system operate without total quality from suppliers?
Quality is critical especially in a just-in-time purchasing system, because poor quality can result in very expensive delays. For instance, if a shipment with rejects arrives, it must be sent back to the supplier. Because the client has very little inventory, such occurrences can shut down the line in some cases e.g., the line runs out of parts, since the supplier’s shipment was expected that day. This means that delays in deliveries from the supplier, results in problems and potential loss of market share. To prevent this, one has to keep close track of its supplier’s quality.
