Some of the strategies that teachers can use to assist learners develop their language skills such as writing and reading include;
- Creating an environment that encourages students to take risks in their writing which means less concentration on conventional rules of writing and more on expression of ideas. It means being less critical at the beginning of the writing process in terms of errors, be it grammatical or otherwise. By not being focused on the errors of a writing piece, a student feels permitted to express his thoughts more freely.
- Acknowledging learners' interests and giving them frequent opportunities to practice writing can help to develop their writing skills.
- Encourage reading. Good writers tend to be avid readers and there is a reason for this. The more a child reads, the more they will be exposed to new vocabulary in context and the more words they will learn. Once a word is part of their receptive vocabulary, it is a lot easier for it to make the transition into productive use.
- Have the learners read aloud. This encourages them to go slower, which gives them more time to process what they read and in turn improves reading comprehension.
- Providing books at the right level. The learners should be provided with practice books that are not too hard. They should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for kids to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
