Discuss the outcomes-oriented approach to the curriculum and its implementation.

The outcomes-based approach is completely student-centered, which focuses on what students know and can actually do. It is an approach by which the learner’s mastery over a particular skill is demonstrated and measured. It directly leads to increasing the proficiency of a particular skill, knowledge, or behavior of the student.

Steps for implementing an outcome-based learning framework include;

  1. Examining organization’s vision and mission
  2. Translating vision into goals
  3. Cascading goals
  4. Identifying the appropriate learning solution
  5. Aligning the learning objectives to performance objectives

Discuss the content-oriented approach to the curriculum and its implementation.

The content-centered curriculum is based upon the idea that various subjects contain essential knowledge, the mastery of which will make child an educated one. It aims to develop students’ content knowledge and language skills via providing authentic and meaningful academic context.

Critically discuss the suitability of each of these approaches to fulfill current curriculum requirements with regard to CAPS. Refer to one or more CAPS curriculum subjects in your discussion.

Outcome-based education (OBE) means clearly focusing and organizing everything in an educational system around what is essential for all students to be able to do successfully at the end of their learning experiences.  CAPS addressed the issue of the learners’ right to learn in their mother tongue. CAPS promoted same content for learners , nationally and this content could at the same time ‘be contextualized according to availability or non-availability of particular resources’, allowing teachers to personalize their own teaching. CAPS paid attention to the content and how the teachers plan, assess and teach during the time allocated for each subject. This is done by providing clear guidelines on pacing, sequencing and curriculum coverage.

 CAPS guides what must be planned and taught against what must be assessed. It is well structured; it covers study areas, topics and sub-topics, examples, plans, annual teaching plans,

assessment activities and resources to guide teachers. This means that teachers are able to plan effectively using these guidelines. Teachers are guided to use appropriate forms of assessment. Time tabling provides clear guidelines on the number of periods to be allocated for each subject.

Examples of outcome based approach is when a candidate is required to satisfy a particular set of criteria (Program outcome) at the end of a program, say Mechanical Engineering. This is intimated to the curriculum development team at institutions before they create the curriculum for each program and course.

Examples of content- oriented approach is when students might have a lesson on French cuisine. This would focus on the French diet and would naturally introduce words such as 'pain' (bread), 'fromage,' (cheese) and 'croissant,' in a meaningful way because the words are presented within the context of the content.
