Marriage, however, has shortened countless children's childhoods in Niger. Child marriage is a key cause of impoverishment and illiteracy in Niger, with the lure of improved economic opportunities and social prestige for both daughters and their guardians. According to Anozie, Ele, and Anika (2018), dread of shame from conception outside of marriage and preserving societal and religious norms are important motivators. In Niger, there is a clear link between education and the predominance of child marriage: 81% of young females aged between ages 20-24 with total illiteracy, and 63% of women aged 20-24 with only early schools were betrothed or in union by the age of 18, roughly equivalent to only 17% of women aged 20-24 with high educational attainment. Married females and mothers have limited choice power, are less likely to generate earnings, and are more exposed to health risks, criminality, abuse, and mistreatment. As a result, women's education will help Niger abolish traditional child marriage practices and allow young girls to realize their fullest capabilities.
