What is the impact of social media on racism in South Africa? (125 words)
Social media platforms are a powerful mechanism through which the right to freedom of expression, access to information, the search for truth and robust public debate can be fostered. Tension does exist between the potential for social media platforms to promote democracy, and the risks which materialize when such platforms are used to publicize and propagate racist speech, thereby exacerbating social fissures in society and undermining democracy. The adverse impacts of such conduct to the basic rights of individuals, communities and society as a whole are immeasurable. Because social media is widely available, it can either help or worsen racism in South Africa.
