Violence is an extreme form of aggression, such as assault, rape or murder. Violence has many causes, including frustration, exposure to violent media, violence in the home or neighborhood and a tendency to see other people's actions as hostile even when they are not. Gender-based violence (GBV) has been recognized as an international public health and human rights issue, but it is also a key driver of extreme poverty. An estimated 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical or sexual violence. Gender-based violence has many causes but the main ones include harmful gender norms, war and conflict, and hunger. The consequences for victims include undermined confidence, physical disabilities, stigma and shame. Sexual violence also puts women at increased risk of HIV/AIDS.
