Describe the assessment requirements for English home language subject. Use the headings included in the CAPS document.

A National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement ( CAPS) gives a detailed guidance for teachers on what they should teach and how to assess. Assessment refers to a continuous planned process of identifying, gathering and interpreting information about the performance of learners using various forms of assessment. Assessment involves four steps which are;

1. Generating and collecting evidence of achievement.
2. Evaluating the evidence.
3. Recording the findings
4. Using the information to understand and thereby assist the learners' development in order to improve the process of learning and teaching.

Assessment should be both formal and informal and in both cases feedback should be provided to learners to enhance the learning experience. The assessment of language skills should be integrated. The assessment of a comprehension passage should be linked to language use. The assessment of writing should incorporate topics about things that happen in real life situations.
